German Solders Head, on the A9 at Slochd

This is the Mimetolith, that is a geological feature that resembles a living thing or common object - in this case a German soldier's head - complete with helmet! At the Slochd Summit on the A9 Inverness to Perth Road. The hanging rock feature is On the Right as you head North (left If your heading South).

I've heard at least three local myths or legends as to how it came to be, The most convincing is that it is simply a naturally occurring Mimetolith. Other stories are:

That is was carved by First World War German POW's who were stationed nearby as a monument to a fellow German Soldier who Died.

Or that it was carved by a Second World War German Pilot who crash landed near by on one of the few Luftwaffe attempts to bomb the Northern Scotland 2nd World War Training camps.

Which ever way it is 1st World War, 2nd World War German Soldier or a naturally occurring phenomenon it is known Locally as the German Soldier and many a kid (yours truly included) have passed the Slochd Pass gazing out the car window to garb a glimpse of him on every A9 Trip!
