Breaking the waves

(flashback to that film -- I vividly remember leaving the cinema in a state of shock, and it was nearly 30 years ago)

We went to the beach! It's much less windy today but the residual effect is still obvious in the state of the sea. We drove to a favourite beach, Cantarrijan, stopping en route to go for a walk up the headland above it. Strangely, there was no wind at all on the top, but by the time we got down to the beach half an hour later, the wind was fearsome and the waves were crashing onto the shore (see extra).

Despite this, a number of hardy northern Europeans were determinedly sitting at tables outside the Barraca -- some in no more than a jumper, others in parkas and woolly hats. We are no longer hardy northern Europeans so we sat inside for lunch, sharing excellent fried aubergines with miel de caña (molasses, a by-product of the nearby rum factory), a steak large enough for both of us to share, and a slice of cheesecake, also big enough to share. I like the fact that sharing is completely normal in Spain, so you don't waste food by ordering more than you can eat. There was a happy buzz in the restaurant as people shared dishes of paella, seafood, and other good stuff.

It wasn't beach sitting weather so we went home afterwards and I enjoyed the sunshine streaming through our south-facing windows while I read my book. Mystère has quite recovered from his nocturnal adventures and had been enjoying his new domain.
