New old camera.

Darren as been in to photography many years, far longer than I’ve been alive. Film cameras in the eighties, nineties and early 2000 and then dipped his toe in to digital about 16 years ago, maybe longer. He still as some of his early Fuji digital cameras which he fondly remembers using.
Technology as moved on enormously but the skill of taking a photo remains the same, cameras can help with aperture and shutter speeds, they can auto focus for you, choose the right iso and even tell you if your horizon is level, but what they can’t do is decide what is worth photographing in the first place and what the best composition is. Despite the technology if you want to capture a stunning sunrise or sunset you have to be there, your camera won’t capture a beautiful sunrise while you’re fast asleep in bed.
So while the cameras on sale today are great, they still need a user to switch it on, compose and press the shutter and that’s the fun of photography, if cameras did everything it wouldn’t be fun anymore.
Now what as all that got to do with the Olympus in the photo. Well it’s the word fun or alternatively the word enjoyment, it seems that technical perfection is more important to camera manufacturers than actual fun. There is an obsession with full frame, more megapixels, 8k video and so many other things and on top of that the prices, have you seen how much these new cameras cost?
The Olympus in photo is from 2015, not that long ago but in camera years a lifetime away. It cost £250, the 2 lenses cost £230, that’s a small amount of money in comparison to todays brand new cameras. It’s a micro four thirds camera, so a small sensor, which means the camera itself is smaller and the lenses are smaller, which means you carry a smaller bag, a lighter bag, which means you take it out more often, because it’s small and light, which means your using it and getting value for your money and ultimately having fun with photography.
Darren thinks this Olympus is the most fun camera he as ever had and because it’s only available used it is by far one of the cheapest he’s bought too.
If photography is not your profession then you don’t really need the latest gear, the used market is the place to look, maybe you’ll find a camera for a few hundred pounds that may become the most fun camera you’ve ever had.
