Klimt books

Three books on Klimt are coming up on sale this week. The Lady in Gold or The Woman in Gold is a famous painting by Gustav Klimt. The portrait was commissioned by the sitter's husband, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. The painting was stolen by the Nazis in 1941 and was later displayed at the Austrian Belvedere Gallery in Vienna where Paladian and I saw it in 2002.

The portrait is the final and most fully representative work of Klimt's golden phase. In 2006 the owner Maria Altmann sold the painting for $135 million, at the time a record price for a painting, to the businessman and art collector Ronald Lauder. He placed the work in the Neue Galerie, the New York-based gallery he co-founded.

This is only the short story. I am sure that many you have seen the movie regarding the full story of the painting called WOMAN IN GOLD
