Through a glass darkly...

Cross purposes

Broiling hot lunchtime. Finding shade and quiet in an English graveyard. The old bits are invariably the best - the praying stone angels, the rowan trees, the final pleas from those left behind..."not dead only resting" and "wrapped in the arms of Jesus".

Beneath every one a story. And in death, as in life, the pecking order: history told by the "winners" - the ones with the monuments. Like National Trust properties, now everyone can enjoy their now anonymous legacy - if not exactly as the monument erectors intended.

A healthy touch of the pagan amid the Christian overlay.
