a lifetime burning

By Sheol

I've taken pity on you all, so today here's a shot that's most definitely not a Great Crest Grebe, although I suspect it would like one to eat if it got a halfway decent chance.

If you look at my journal regularly you almost certainly recognise the male Marsh Harrier from the Westhay Nature Reserve, as it has a distinctive gap in primary remige number 7 (the 4th flight feather in from the wing tip).  I had assumed that the flight feathers would be numbered from the tip inwards but they aren't.  The 10 primary flight feathers (which sprout from what would be the bird's hand) are numbered from what would be the wrist joint (primary flight feather number 1) up to the wing's leading edge, with that last shorter feather being number 10.
