Before... (Friday 24th February 2023)

Diary blip. After the great thaw of 18/19 December, which caused the toilet's plumbing in the outbuilding to flood, it took until 30 December to get the insurers to restore the power there, because of all the houses without heat or power in their homes. The next step was for them to supply humidifiers to dry out the building and I have tried chasing them up a couple of times since then.
Finally, today I got a call out of the blue from one of the team, Andy, to say he was a couple of minutes away, and he soon got busy writing off water-damaged items including a giant angle-poise, an armchair and any hi-fi equipment that was directly on the soaked carpet, doing electrical tests, and taking up the carpet and underlay.
My other hi-fi units had escaped damage following patch tests and I was finally able to take them out to be stored in the house. Ironically, it began to rain before I could find storage space for it all in the conservatory. If I had been told it was necessary I could have done it any time after the flood.
Finally, he installed the two humidifiers that you can see in the blip, and these are to be left on 24-hours a day for the next two weeks (at their expense, thank goodness!).
I have been able to keep a written-off pine table and bench seat to use as planters in the garden, and a few collapsible wooden chairs that can't now be used indoors.
The same pre-Christmas freeze-out also caused water to penetrate my 17th century limestone rear wall that faces next-door's garden, so I don't normally see it, causing clumps of crumbling stone to fall onto their path. The storms and freezing conditions had also damaged their front walls at the same time. Both these jobs are being dealt with by an expert builder, but are unlikely to be covered by insurance, and the cost to their listed home will run into thousands. I await my quote with interest...
