Preserving the past

In the old days, Braidwood was a gold town. Now, it's mostly sheep, cattle and forestry that keep it going. But it remains a picture of the past, because the entire town is on the State Heritage Register, as "a coherent and well-preserved 19th-century township set within a rolling pastoral landscape".

In driving time, Braidwood is about midway between Batemans Bay and Canberra, and it's where we often stop on trips to see the family. Today, we were on our way home, and pulled up right here to change drivers.

Braidwood's first newspaper was published in 1858 and the town had the first daily newspaper in regional New South Wales. The present paper, the Times, serves a number of other towns as well as Braidwood, and is published once a week. It operates from the old Albion Coach House, once part of the Albion Hotel next door.
