By way of a change...

... this is a bird I had never heard about before.

I am reliably informed that this morning, in the RHS bird hide, I was able to photograph this Redpoll.

I don't think I had ever seen one before - so it made a nice change to watch it hammering its beak rapidly into the feeder spraying the contents quite widely.

A grey squirrel on the ground was, equally rapidly, gobbling up the food falling to the ground.

I've included an extra shot of the bird, This shows the detailed feather pattern on its back.
