The Skelpies

This is a recent sculpture erected in Port Glasgow to celebrate its history of shipbuilding. For long it remained unnamed, as far as I knew. My sister came over from Spain for a school reunion and was told that the sculpture was referred to locally as 'the Skelpies'. It is a play on the Scots word 'skelp' meaning to hit and also a reference to the more famous Kelpies in Falkirk.
