To Infinity, And Beyond

On This Day In History
1972: Pioneer 10  launched to Jupiter

Quote Of The Day
"It will be the oldest artifact of mankind. A billion years from now, mountain building and erosion will have destroyed everything on Earth, but the plaque will remain intact."
(Carl Sagan)

Bonus Quote Of The Day
"We're particularly anxious to get our hands on Pioneer 10 - the first man-made object to escape from the solar system."
(Arthur C. Clarke)

Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are famous for each carrying a gold disc bearing Messages From Earth, but Pioneer 10 started the trend with a golden plaque. Both the plaque and the disc were the brainchild of Carl Sagan, who wished to send a message to any extra-terrestrial intelligences that the probes might encounter on their journeys beyond the solar system.
