Requiem For a Snag

I’ve seen many a raptor at the top of this old tree, but, alas, this landmark is no more. Only last week it was offering up its huge height as a vantage point for whoever was flying by, but this morning there was about a thirty foot log flattening the grass in the field. I missed about a week of walking this path, so I don’t know when it happened. There were two other big wrecks along the way, so the wind must have been a lot stronger than we noticed at home.
One extra shows another angle of the broken tree. The other is a woodpecker, I think maybe a downy woodpecker, who wasted no time getting over to the remaining stump to look for grubs.
