inspiration all around us

Inspired by an old Kendal building.

Kendal Civic Society’s plaque for this 170 year old building tells us that ‘these iron-plate fronts were erected to save space as part of a street widening scheme ordered by the board of health in 1851’.
This iron plating method was first used by Joseph Paxton in the building of Crystal Palace for the 1851 exhibition. Kendal’s well preserved specimen is thought to be the only surviving example of this technique.
