Threave Nature Reserve

Today's the day ...................... for the boardwalk

I paid a visit to the Nature Reserve at Threave Castle near Castle Douglas today.

The land is owned by The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), and managed in partnership with Galloway Glens Partnership Scheme (GGLP), a coalition of several local and specialist organisations. The reserve was once a dairy farm but the project aims to restore the landscape as it was originally - and to re-develop a healthy and sustainable ecosystem which, over time, will transform the estate from a net carbon emitter to a net carbon sequesterer.

It's a place where local people have long gone for walks in the woodland or along the banks of the River Dee.  For several years now, ospreys have nested in a specially-built platform (see extra) on the reserve - and successfully reared young.  Hopefully, in a couple of weeks or so, they will return again this year.

Over the winter, they have been doing all sorts of construction work to make new paths and boardwalks over the really marshy areas.  So it is going to be much easier for visitors to access all the different areas of the reserve - and to enjoy the very special wildlife to be found there ...................
