Retable

The Retable is back on public display in the castle. It is an early 15th century oak altarpiece featuring the Virgin Mary and saints. It was damaged during the Reclamation with the saints’ faces scratched away.

Admired it up close today while working in the room. Amazing markings and Latin “graffiti” in a beautiful scrolled script. The conservator tells me it may have been used as a table at some point. So interesting and unusual as an object.
