Ilford

Many thanks to DarkEyedMary who sprang into action when she read our blip for yesterday. Her contributed picture is a response to our suggestion of a way to represent Ilford in our blipper-sourced online photo album of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series).

In her war diary, Lorna only makes a passing reference to Ilford. This is as a place where she once resided, but never really considered home. It is the bombing of Bristol in late 1940 that makes her realise that her roots are in really in this city, as noted in her diary entry of 5th December 1940. This features in Episode 7 of the podcast series of The diary of the war.

We believe that Lorna lived in Ilford from around (or soon after) 1919 until 1924, as summarised in our text that accompanies the LornaL journal entry for 23rd November 1920. Lorna's other home towns are also covered in the same entry: Filton, Bristol; Stirling; Sheffield; Cambridge; Stourbridge; Bath; and Malvern.

In 2020, we found several old photographs that picture Lorna in Ilford. Some were taken in the garden of the Lloyd family's house (for example, sunbathing in a deckchair, reading, posing with her parents for a photograph taken by her brother) and others in Valentines Park (such as this one). There's also a very sweet shot of Lorna in an Ilford street playing ball with the family dog. (According to its Wikipedia entry, Valentines Park could be the subject of the song Itchycoo Park.)

In the list below are the 20 places for which we still need blipper-donated photographs. Please do let us know if you can help us reach our goal of completing this challenge. If you send your contribution(s) (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk it/they can be featured alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. Thank you!
