Edward Vll and Alexandra

With a little more than a month to go before the coronation of Charles lll and Camilla I thought it would be interesting to look back to the coronation of Edward Vll and Alexandra.  There is a lesson to be learnt here that, despite impeccable planning, things can and do go wrong at grand State ceremonies.
The coronation was planned for 26th June 1902 however, just before this date, the King suffered an appendicitis and developed peritonitis.  The King wanted to continue with the date as planned but was advised that this could kill him so he reluctantly agreed to change the date to 9th August 1902.  At his ceremony the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was at that time very old, frail and nearly blind, fluffed some of his lines and at the moment of crowning placed the crown on Edward's head the wrong way round.
The blip is of a gold plated medallion commemorating the coronation that I dug up whilst metal detecting about 20 years ago.  Much of the gold plating did not survive its prolonged burial and this has exposed the copper alloy beneath.
