Paper Wasps are lethal enemies to the life cycle of monarch butterflies.

Early in the season the young are fed live prey, but at this stage, they move to nectar for their sustenance.

They are easily identified in flight as their legs trail behind them. They manoeuvre like a helicopter.

As their numbers increase, the monarch numbers decrease - and why many of us humans use butterfly castles to protect the eggs, caterpillars and butterflies of the magnificent monarchs.

The extra is a full view of the same paper wasp.

Photos seen when the ‘tag’ is clicked will show paper wasps in action - see page 2, bottom row.

Thank you for the comments, stars and hearts for yesterday’s scenic corner of the local estuary. It looks quite different at low tide when the mudflat is uncovered!
