Scottish Widows Building

This A listed building opposite the Commonwealth pool is on the way to / from my running route to Holyrood Park.

It was designed in the early 1970s and opened in 1976 for Scottish Widows.  Often attributed to Sir Basil Spence the building was actually designed by his partner John Hardie Glover in conjunction with the landscape designer Dame Sylvia Crow.  Its made up of a series of interlocking hexagonal blocks of different heights representing the local geology.

Staff moved out of this building some years ago and since then it's been empty.  Planning applications have been submitted to redevelop the site.  Hidden Doors will be taking over the building for a five day event at the end of May when the space will be transformed into a venue for the arts.

Later in the day we went to see the terrific Korean film Broker at the Cameo.
