Angel - Rochdale Town Hall

Yesterday Catherine and I were lucky to catch the last ever scaffolding tour in the great hall of Rochdale Town Hall.

The Town Hall is being refurbished and restored and if you want to fly inside then click this link to the Town Hall instagram account :

A fascinating hour learning how they are bringing the building back to how it was, and what the building will become. The painstaking work of cleaning and restoring really does make you wonder, but so right that it should. Craftsmen and volunteers taking so much care.

It is a beautiful building, and possibly the best example of Gothic Architecture in Britain.

Hitler was a fan - no really - and wanted to take back to Berlin to replace the Reichstag. Look it up!

It has always been part of my life, as it also houses a world famous pipe organ, and dad was an organist. In fact he and my mum are commemorated on a plaque on the organ stool, provided by the memorial fund in their name. The organ is also due to be restored as part of the building refurbishment, in phase 3 or 4 - plenty of work left to go.

Main picture I actually took with a camera, rest are phone snaps. It's always easier to take phone snaps somehow, but there's always one camera pic that beats them all.

The 'gargoyle' holding the town hall is actually Crossland the designer who wanted to build it, and he's looking across the room at other caricatures of councillors who wanted to keep the money for other things. Great little details.
