Goverake

Goverake mine. Disused for many years it was in danger of being demolished ten years ago until a concerted effort saved it. It is the last standing mining headframe in County Durham.
After taking this photo I went to church in Allendale and was speaking to one of the churchwardens. Her husband used to work in this mine. Many years ago they both descended down the mine for him to check on equipment. That would not be allowed in today’s health and safety environment. Extras are views nearby.
It was cold here today, with snow on the North Pennine hills.
