Fort Nepean

Last day of the reunion so we headed out to the gun emplacements at Point Nepean at the extreme tip of the Mornington Peninsula. Here’s isbi at work in one of the tunnels. I suspect the average height might have been a bit shorter in the 1880s.
The extra is taken about 1 km up the road and shows Cheviot Beach at low tide. An extraordinary moment in Australia’s history occurred at this secluded spot in December 1967 when our Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming. The circumstances have been debated ever since and many theories abound, including drowning but the most plausible of course is that Mr Holt was picked up by a waiting Chinese submarine.
