Life in Newburgh on Ythan

April Fools’ Day

In France, April Fools’ Day is known for the “poisson d’Avril” (April Fish), a tradition that dates back to 1564.

According to my good friend Prof. Google, the origin of the April Fish in France is relatively obscure. Some say it was reminiscent of the ichthus used by Christians in Roman times.

This postcard, dated 1912, has hung in our hall for as long as I can remember. An Easter present from our first born.
