A grand day out

The day being sunny, breezy and sort of warm, I needed a well hunt! I wanted to revisit St Brendan's Well at Castlepoint and although the well was looking less than glamorous, the area around it was stunning! Amazing colours in the sunshine with all those blues, and the gorse blazing. Primroses, violets and the first of the bluebells were also evident. The water was copious from the well which holds a cure for cattle ailments - many appeared to have recently visited it! We also tried to walk out to the castle, Leamcon Castle, which is accessed down a tiny boreen - a path where two cattle could walk abreast. Fat chance of that today for the mud was knee high and the briars fierce, we both nearly came a cropper and reluctantly conceded defeat.
We then grabbed a sandwich and coffee in Schull and made our way to another forgotten well. Again, it was in a madly scenic position close to the sea and the ruins of Aughadown church. The original site of the well is under a gnarly hawthorn tree, now completely swamped and boggy, but the well has helpfully sprung up down by the road, I was delighted to find that the water was looking good and there was evidence of use - a crucifix, a fluttering of rags. This one is dedicated to the obscure St Conall. We finished off our tiki tour at Roaringwater pier where a teeny but charming cabin is for sale at an outrageous price, We pressed our noses to the glass and it looked lovely but only two rooms and a single bed. There is  a well next door too but not a holy one.
A grand day out.
