In Golden Light

In amongst the now quite numerous teals, I spotted a bird distinct from the the ducks, although of similar size and shape. Again, not knowing what it was, I resorted to the Merlin ID app for identification which informed me it was a Pied-billed Grebe. Another first for me.

They have a unique ability to control how much of their bodies (or just the head) are above water, by trapping air in their feathers to control buoyancy. Also, because the feet are far back on their bodies, they are not able to walk on land.
