Ferry Across the Severn

There has been a ferry crossing of the Severn by the cathedral since the 12th century, though some historians believe it goes back much further. In 1378 the Watergate was built to give the ferry an embarkation point, the service then ran regularly until the 1950s. The name of every ferryman during that time is logged in the cathedral archives.

In 1983 the ferry was resurrected by volunteers running a part time service and making money, currently passengers are charged 50p per trip, dogs are free but presumably only when they travel with their owner. All the money goes to local charities.

The ferry was running today. It's the first time I've actually seen it, though I've known of its existence. Unlike the Stratford chain ferry this boat is hand rowed.

The forecast for today was sun, sun, sun. Unfortunately we had clouds and a chilly wind. Still we had a nice walk by the river and rewarded ourselves with a coffee at Cafe Nero.
