Glasgow Art Club

The weather could not have been better today, and it has been a delight taking my group around Glasgow on our special Mackintosh Tour.

Our tour started in the morning at The Mackintosh Church, we then visited The Mackintosh House and finished at the lesser known Ruchill Hall. We then headed back into the city for lunch at the Corinthian Club, which is one of my favourite buildings in Glasgow. The group were really impressed by the opulent surroundings of this Glasgow Landmarks building.

After lunch we drove over to view the Burrell Collection in Pollok Park and our afternoon tour finished with tea and coffee in the timeless surroundings of the Glasgow Art Club.

The Glasgow Art Club was established in 1867, and by 1892 they obtained their own property. Two mid 19th century town houses at 187 and 191 Bath Street. In 1893 these two adjacent town houses were transformed into the magnificent Clubhouse which still stands today. The design and works, including the breathtaking gallery, were by the architectural firm 'Honeyman & Keppie' who employed Charles Rennie Mackintosh at the time.

This is the magnificent carving over one of the Fireplaces in the Gallery.
