Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Reproducing mosses

The sporangia of a moss growing in the remnants of last year's hanging basket.
Decades ago I went on an undergraduate field course devoted to mosses. What I particularly remember is that all the short Latin names had been used up by the time that the taxonomists got around to naming the mosses! One that  I particularly remember was the very rare Green shield-moss Buxbaumia viridis. The name has remained lodged in my memory bank ever since!

Extra.Talking of memories, Mistress Talpa, a loyal Royalist, has started her forthcoming coronation enjoyment by looking out souvenirs from the last coronation including her celebratory school photograph.
