Zoned Out

This is a Honeywell Zone valve. It has two jobs. One,be open or closed depending if the hot water has been turned on and two, trigger the boiler to make hot water.

It had failed in both of these tasks. It had however failed in the open position which mean if the heating was on then the boiler was on and we had hot water.

As the heating has been on a lot we have usually had ample hot water, however as the weather has become mildly milder and the heating has not been on as much…. Yes you have guessed it. Odd times when we were expecting hot showers, no hot water.

It took a while to find the problem but our friendly plumber explained how I could test the valve and sure enough it is knackered ( the motor doesn’t turn and there were some strange humming noises when I turned it on).

Luckily we happened to have a spare so I swapped them out. A quick test, hot water turned on, valve opens, boiler fires, pump starts pumping. I’m really hoping that’s sorted it.
