The statue of Africa explorer HM Stanley remains outside the library. 
A couple of years ago a vote was called after the council received petitions to remove Stanley's figure over accusations of cruelty and racism during his explorations.

Residents who took part voted overwhelmingly to retain the bronze of Stanley, who was born in the town.
