Derelict bakery

Before we left Canberra this morning I photographed this heritage-listed building in the city-centre suburb of Braddon, near our hotel. It was built in 1927, at the very start of the city-building process to create a new national capital for Australia. We lived for 30 years in a 1927 house in the neighbouring suburb of Reid and often bought bread here, from Coggan’s Bakery.

But the building has fallen on hard times, and has been unused and derelict for some years. Its heritage-listed status means it can’t be demolished, but it doesn’t require the owner to maintain it!

Two years ago the owners announced they intended to redevelop it as a restaurant and bar. Much rejoicing! But nothing has happened so far. I hope for the best.

I’m tagging this for Derelict Sunday. Thanks Marlieske for hosting.
