Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

Years ago I ordered a replica of an old map of Florence for ease of reference while writing my Cesare Aldo historical thrillers set in that city. The map only dates back to the 19th Century, but accurate and legible maps of the city from before that period are very hard to find. (You know where I can access one, let me know!)

What I love most about this example is the notation that it was 'Published under the Superintendance of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge' - so, Wikipedia for Victorians?
