Berwick upon Tweed Lighthouse

Most people went home today we, as last year, decided to stay an extra day in the North East. Our Canadian friend who was with us this week was travelling from Alnwick to Peebles prior to going back to Ontario from Glasgow on Sunday. So we spent the day with her in Berwick before going south.

Berwick was ideally placed between Peebles and Durham, our overnight stop.

After a wet and very windy night the sky cleared and the sun came out as we travelled up the A1 to Berwick, but the wind remained strong. The great attraction of Berwick is its walls, which encircle the town completely and give great views of the coast, countryside, three superb bridges and townscape as well as lots of interesting history about the area.

The famous painter L S Lowry spent alot of time here and there is a Lowry Trail around the town mostly following the Walls Trail. Lowry spent time sketching and painting Berwick scenes, the pier being one of them.

I could not resist taking endless shots of waves breaking over the lighthouse. The seas were raging but the sky blue.

From Berwick we headed south to our overnight stop in Durham.
