Lucy Rie exhibition

Went to a wonderful ceramics exhibition today with a friend. Lucy Rie (1902-1995) was a German Jewish potter who escaped Austria in 1939 and thankfully came to England where she eventually became a massive influence on British ceramics with her innovative and daring experiments in glazes, colour and design. Just after WW2 she kept going by selling ceramic buttons until she exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. It was impossible to pick even five favourites, let alone one, her story is so interesting. But I loved this one with its rich colours and seductive shape. My hands were itching to feel the texture of all the exhibits which, to my mind, is as important as the visual pleasure. Nevertheless it’s a terrific show!

If you can get to Cambridge I really recommend it. Find out more here:
