A Day in London

We made the most of our day in London in spite of it not having worked out according to our original plans.

The day started cloudy but with sun forecast for the afternoon, so we spent the first part of the day at the Science Museum - we've not been there for years. We were particularly interested in the exhibition on Mathematics. The gallery was designed by Zara Hadid, who trained first in mathematics before studying architecture. The curved overhead structure (shown in this panoramic shot) - and indeed the layout of the whole gallery - represents airflow around the Handley Page aircraft suspended at its centre. The design was driven by equations of airflow used in the aviation industry, which are still an important area of mathematical research.

Hoping for some sunshine we then went for a walk through some  of the parks. The sunshine never appeared but it stayed dry and in fact was quite a nice temperature for walking. So we went through Hyde Park, Green Park (and hence round the front of Buckingham Palace - a week late of course for the Coronation!) and St James's Park. In the latter were some more photo opportunities, including a very tame squirrel (first extra) and some even tamer parakeets (second extra).
