pink tube

Swim in the morning. We didn't have any particular plans for today so I suggested to investigate the huge pink tube in the centre of Berlin. It turns out it is part of the Technical University and contains a circulation tank. It was built in 1974. Two ship diesel engines can move water up to 10m/s. Measurements are taken along a length of 11m, the channel is up to 5m wide and up to 3m deep and contains 3300t of water. It was disused for quite a while since the experiments are largely replaced by numerical experiments. The building is now listed and was refurbished 5 years ago. There is a nice video of the restoration on youtube. The stylish building underneath contains a 120m towing tank, a bit like the Denny Tank in Dumbarton.
