The Electric Press

That time of year again - three days teaching at Leeds Uni. The group of students this year are really lovely and I had a great day with them. It was also really good to catch up with two of my previous students who were helping out as demonstrators.

I had a bit of time to spare before my return train left so sat for a while in the peaceful oasis of the Nelson Mandela Gardens. The Electric Press Building in the background is a Grade II listed building that started life as a printing works for the firm of Chorley and Pickersgill. That brand new American electric printing press that gives it its name was installed in 1899, only 5 years after the start of electricity supply in Leeds city centre by the Yorkshire House to House Electricity Company from its power station in Whitehall Road. The building is now used as a bar and restaurant.
