Inspired by another weather vane.

I was on my way to a lively concert in St Anne’s church, Ings when I happened to look up and spot this weather vane. It appears to be some sort of bird, but why is he standing under a sphere? My enquiries so far have got me no-where but I’m sure there must be a local who knows the story.
