Wine pipe seat

Today my friends J and C, and I,  visited The Wakes in Selborne, near Alton, former home to the 18h century naturalist,  Gilbert  White. It  now houses  a museum about  White and also  the Oates Collection ( about  Lawrence, the Antarctic explorer and his  uncle, Frank, an explorer and naturalist in Africa). The Wakes However, it was the garden which  appealed most to us today. Here is Jenny trying out a reproduction of White's  revolving  wine pipe seat, in the meadow. (A wine pipe is a kind of barrel, we discovered) Our entry tickets are valid for a year so we look forward  to returning to see the garden in a another season, and  to see more of the museum, oh and also, to climb the zig- zag path up the  hill nearby,  which Gilbert White  designed and  had made.
