Life after Burradoo, NSW

A sobering reminder

This morning we visited the Australian War Memorial, a very significant institution located in Canberra. Its covers all conflicts in which Australia has been involved but, thankfully, does not glorify war. It seems to achieve a balanced approach to honouring those who have served and recognising the horror of war.

In 1939 Australia declared war on Germany because Britain had declared war on Germany after its invasion of Poland. That rationale for Australia going to war would probably not be supported by the current Australian population. Much has changed in Australia since 1939.

We spent all of our time this visit in the galleries devoted to World War II. It reminded us of just how much of the world was at war from 1939 to 1945. It made us nervous about the current apparent rise of fascism and aggressive dictators again.
