Parliament

Today we visited the Australian Parliament in Canberra. It’s a beautiful building and is always a joy to visit. The extra shows part of the entrance hall. We had tickets for Question Time, which is always interesting too.

Australia became a federation in 1901, but it took a while to establish a permanent home for the federal parliament, initially because of rivalries between Sydney and Melbourne about the location of the new parliament. From 1901 to 1927 the parliament met in Melbourne, In 1927 a provisional Parliament House was opened in Canberra. The Australian Capital Territory was created within NSW to provide an independent base and the city of Canberra was created more or less from scratch. Finally the present Parliament was opened by the Queen in 1988.
