a lifetime burning

Meanwhile ...

So, while the Azures are struggling to emerge in the blustery conditions, the large reds are getting on with the job of ensuring the survival of the species.  Although they are a bit bigger than the Azures the Reds aren't that big, certainly nowhere near the size of the Demoiselles.

It's a dangerous time to be a female damselfy. The male holds her by what is effectively the neck and so the forces of the buffeting wind on their two bodies are all applied to her neck joint.  These two seemed to be coping well though, so I don't think this particular female was about to end up losing her head, but it does happen. It shines a light on expressions such as "to lose one's head" over something...

I haven't done anything with the background to this shot - that's actually the surface of the pond - the effect is accentuated by the fact that the leaf that the damselflies are resting on is actually moving quite a bit in the wind.

The damselflies are getting a bit repetitive on my part so I will probably go in search of new subject material tomorrow.  Perhaps.
