WACHU GOT?

This Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) lives in the Zoo in Milwaukee. But they are native to Africa, specifically the southern portions from Kenya to South Africa.  They eat mainly insects but will take amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds.  This one has found what appears to be the larva of a May Beetle (Phyllophaga sp.) known colloquially as June Bugs.....even though they are not true bugs which are in the Order Hemiptera while beetles are in the Order Coleoptera.  He loves to parade around with food sources before swallowing them.

I've Blipped this bird before and mentioned that he had found a pair of sunglasses that were carelessly dropped into the enclosure by a less than cognizant visitor.  He has learned that if he picks up what he finds and walks toward the main gate, sooner or later the keeper will trade him a mouse for whatever he has found....clever bird.

In the wild their Conservation Status is listed as Vulnerable...presumably due to habitat loss and competition with humans.  This one has learned how to deal successfully with humans.

Best in Large.
