Stuff I See

Up In Smoke

I went to a function at this intriguingly-named old Norwich pub today, and found out the origins of its name.

The story is pretty grim.

In the 15th/16th centuries there were chalk pits here, just outside Norwich Cathedral estate. A certain type of dissident who criticised the Catholic Church, known as Lollards, would be brought here from the cathedral, handed over to non-church authorities, and then tied to a stake and burned to death.
