Pignut

The pignuts are in full flower and look wonderful en mass but today I decided to take a close shot of an individual. The whole flower head was only about 3 or 4 cm across. The pignut is an umbellifer, a member of the carrot family and is common in our part of the island. The nut-like part of the root can be eaten but I have never tried it.
I was kept busy with lots of little jobs today, not least a trip to the village to pick up our post from the past couple of days. I was excited to hear from a reliable source that next week we will have daily postal deliveries once again. A trainee is going to accompany the postie who has now returned from sick leave (I do hope they don’t ask too much of her) and does deliveries in the first half of the week so that the trainee can then take over the route for the second half of the week. It’s not an easy route as we are a widely scattered community with lots of homes along and at the end of rough tracks.
The day concluded with a lovely meal with friends at a nearby restaurant where  the highlight for me was the sautéed field mushrooms on toasted brioche with Parmesan shavings and truffle oil. Mmmmm.
