Cranefly

I have seen this insect flitting about the long grass in the woods on quite a few of my afternoon walks but one has never stayed still long enough for me to photograph it, until today. Disappointingly, the wing patterns were a lot more striking in reality than they appear in the photograph. Once back home, I looked it up and discovered that it is a member of the cranefly family, although it looks a lot more glamorous that the “daddy longlegs” that drift into the house on occasion.
As always, lunch club was a delicious social occasion with a choice between butternut squash and carrot soup or mushroom soup, followed by a choice of cheesecakes (raspberry and white chocolate or Malteser), all homemade.
