Dame's Violet

A very pale specimen of Hesperis matronalis variously  known as Dame's Violet, Dame's Rocket, Dame's gilliflower, summer lilac, sweet rocket, night-scented gilliflower. As some of the names suggest the flowers which vary in colour from pale mauve to deep purple have a sweet scent particularly in the evening.

The botanical name is derived from the Greek word for evening -helpers.

Originally a garden escapee the plant has become invasive in places.
