BULL ELK of SUMMER

Early summer provides just brief glimpses of bull elk. Some years I’ve been lucky and seen herds of bulls several days in a row. The last couple of years, not as lucky.
As warm weather kicks in, they hang out in secret ‘boys only’ locations. Not to be seen again until mid to late August.

I’m thinking this handsome one will be a pretty good size by late summer,
but I’ve seen bigger racks this time of year.

Those velvet-coated antlers ---grow with incredible speed.
An amazing one inch a day. Stopping mid-August when testosterone levels rise.

Also seen: 2 yearling moose.
Not seen: elusive moose cow & calf
