Enjoy the freedom of the car

Why some people repeatedly choose to waste their lives in traffic jams continues to baffle me. Today I was a little less detached as the petrolheads meant it took the airport bus over 3 hours to get from Oxford to Gatwick, on the way to visit Katja's family.

On arrival in Germany things are rather better: we are (temporarily) dancing with the devilish auto, having hired a car to get us to her rural hometown in the north-east. Driving in the early hours meant we avoided other traffic, though even in this super-efficient country there were plenty of roadworks to temper our progress.

Of course two wheels are clearly better, and next time we'll take the train, but I did find one good thing about cars: they are the only place where you can safely wail along to cheesy 80s balleds at full volume on dodgy late-nite Berlin radio. And there's a lot to be said for that!
