My parents have a big pond and this morning it was teeming with life - diving beetles, water boatmen, dragonfly larvae, newts, giant tadpoles and snails amongst many, many creatures visible in the depths.

This beauty, a Common darter I think, fell in the water and I rescued it with a stout piece of grass. While it dried its wings it couldn't fly for a minute or two, giving me the chance to take its photo.

Back home now - the cat was relieved to see us rather than annoyed to have been stuck inside overnight, I think.
